XML Sitemap

An XML sitemap is a file that lists all important pages on your website, helping search engines discover and crawl your content efficiently.

How TamRank Sitemaps Work

TamRank automatically generates a sitemap index at:

https://yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml

This index links to individual sitemaps for different content types:

  • post-sitemap.xml – Blog posts
  • page-sitemap.xml – Pages
  • category-sitemap.xml – Categories
  • author-sitemap.xml – Author archives

Configuring Your Sitemap

Navigate to TamRank → Settings → Sitemaps

Include/Exclude Content Types

Toggle which content should appear in your sitemap:

  • Posts: Include by default
  • Pages: Include (except privacy policy, etc.)
  • Media: Usually exclude
  • Categories: Include if they have unique content
  • Tags: Consider excluding to avoid thin content

Excluding Specific Posts

To exclude individual posts from the sitemap:

  1. Edit the post
  2. Go to the TamRank meta box
  3. Open “Advanced” settings
  4. Check “Exclude from sitemap”

Submitting to Search Engines

Google Search Console

  1. Go to Google Search Console
  2. Select your property
  3. Navigate to Sitemaps
  4. Enter sitemap_index.xml
  5. Click Submit

Bing Webmaster Tools

  1. Go to Bing Webmaster Tools
  2. Select your site
  3. Go to Configure My Site → Sitemaps
  4. Submit your sitemap URL

Sitemap Limits

TamRank follows search engine guidelines:

  • Maximum 50,000 URLs per sitemap
  • Maximum 50MB file size (uncompressed)
  • Automatic splitting when limits are reached

Troubleshooting

Sitemap returns 404:

  • Go to Settings → Permalinks and save (refreshes rewrite rules)

Posts not appearing:

  • Check if the post is set to “noindex”
  • Verify the post is published (not draft)

Sitemap not updating:

  • Clear your caching plugin
  • TamRank updates sitemaps automatically on publish
